Warranty and GARAN Label from September 27, 2026

From September 27, 2026, warranty and GARAN labels become mandatory in the EU for Shopify stores. No transition period. Here's how it affects you and your products.

The next mandatory deadline for online stores is set: From September 27, 2026, new EU requirements for displaying warranty rights and manufacturer guarantees will apply.

If you sell physical products to consumers through your online store, you should not postpone this topic. The new warranty label affects the majority of B2C stores. And for certain manufacturer guarantees, the new GARAN label also comes into play.

At first glance, it sounds like yet another label, yet another requirement, and yet another adjustment in the store.

And fundamentally, it is.

The good news: In Shopify, this can be implemented cleanly—and you don’t need an additional app or another monthly subscription.

We will show you what is changing, who is affected by the new requirements, and what you need to adjust specifically in your Shopify store.

What Changes from September 27, 2026?

The new requirements are based on the EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition. The goal is, among other things, to make it clearer to consumers what legal rights they have when purchasing a product and whether a manufacturer offers a voluntary durability guarantee beyond that.

From September 27, 2026, two new EU elements must be taken into account:

  • the harmonized notice on legal warranty rights
  • the GARAN label for certain voluntary manufacturer durability guarantees

You should not confuse these two terms.

Warranty and Guarantee: What Is the Difference?

Warranty and guarantee are often used interchangeably in everyday language. Legally, however, they are two different things.

Warranty Is Legally Required

The legal warranty concerns your responsibility as a seller toward your customers.

If a consumer purchases a product and it has a defect, the legal warranty rights apply.

These rights exist regardless of whether the manufacturer additionally offers a guarantee.

A Guarantee Is an Additional Voluntary Service

A guarantee, on the other hand, is a voluntary additional service provided by the manufacturer or seller.

The new GARAN label does not apply to just any guarantee. What is relevant is a voluntary manufacturer durability guarantee that:

  • applies to the entire product,
  • is free of charge for the consumer, and
  • runs for more than two years.

This is where a closer look is worthwhile: What matters is a duration of more than two years. A guarantee of exactly two years does not trigger this specific GARAN labeling.

Who Is Affected by the New Warranty Label?

If you sell physical products to consumers, you should generally assume that the new information requirement affects you.

This applies, for example, to:

  • traditional Shopify online stores
  • D2C brands
  • retailers selling new goods
  • retailers selling used goods
  • products with digital components such as smartphones or household appliances
  • sales via other online sales platforms

Pure digital content, SaaS offerings, or services are not affected. Pure B2B stores also do not fall under the consumer-related information requirement.

In short:

If you sell physical products via Shopify to end customers, you should review your store.

How Must the Warranty Label Be Displayed in the Online Store?

And this is where it becomes interesting for Shopify.

The EU specifies the design and content of the harmonized warranty notice. You cannot simply write a short text yourself like:

“Two years of warranty apply.”

Unfortunately, it is not that simple.

For online sales, the official presentation of the harmonized notice must be used. The content itself may not be arbitrarily changed.

It is also crucial that your customers can perceive the information before concluding the purchase contract.

The notice must therefore be integrated into the store in a clearly visible and easily accessible manner.

Is a Notice in the Terms and Conditions Sufficient?

No.

Simply hiding the new information somewhere in the terms and conditions does not fulfill the purpose of the requirement.

The information should be clearly perceptible to consumers and available before the purchase.

This is not a typical “We add a sentence to the legal texts and we’re done” topic.

It is an actual adjustment in the store.

Where Should the Warranty Notice Be Integrated in Shopify?

There is no single Shopify location that works identically for every store.

The crucial point is:

Your customers must be able to reach the information clearly before the purchase.

Depending on the theme and structure of the store, various locations may be suitable.

For example:

  • in the product information area
  • in a global information area of the store
  • in connection with the shopping cart
  • in the checkout, provided the Shopify configuration used allows corresponding adjustments

It is especially important that you do not only think about the traditional product page.

Modern Shopify stores often have multiple paths to purchase:

Quick Add. Cart Drawer. Sticky Add-to-Cart. Buy Now button. Product slider. Collection Quick Buy.

If customers can jump directly toward checkout via one of these paths, the implementation must be structured overall so that the mandatory information is not simply bypassed.

This is precisely why we prefer to implement such adjustments directly in the theme and tailored to the actual store structure, rather than simply installing some app.

And What About the New GARAN Label?

The GARAN label is somewhat more specific.

It is not integrated across the board for your entire store, but is always assigned to a specific product.

It is relevant when the manufacturer offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years for the entire product for this product.

The label contains, among other things:

  • the duration of the manufacturer guarantee in years
  • the manufacturer or brand
  • the specific model identifier
  • further information on the guarantee

These details must match the respective product.

Where Must GARAN Be Displayed in Shopify?

Unlike the general warranty notice, the GARAN label must be clearly linked to the respective product.

For Shopify, this means:

The information belongs on the product page or directly with the respective product offering.

For online stores, there is also a more compact presentation, through which the complete label can then be accessed.

This is particularly useful for mobile product pages. No one wants to place a huge mandatory label between the product price and the add-to-cart button.

The art, therefore, is to integrate the legal information correctly without unnecessarily degrading the user experience of the store.

What Information Do We Need from You?

For the general warranty notice, the matter is relatively straightforward.

For the GARAN label, it becomes product-specific.

Before we can adjust your Shopify store, you should therefore clarify:

  1. Do you sell physical products to consumers within the EU?
  2. Do manufacturers of your products offer a free durability guarantee for the entire product of more than two years?
  3. For which products or product groups does this guarantee apply?
  4. How long does the respective guarantee run?
  5. Which manufacturer or brand offers it?
  6. Which model or product identifier belongs to the respective item?
  7. Which guarantee conditions does the manufacturer provide to you?
  8. In which languages do you operate your store?

Point two is particularly crucial.

You do not simply have to display a GARAN label for every product just because the word “guarantee” appears somewhere.

It concerns a very specific form of manufacturer guarantee.

Multilingual Shopify Store? Then It Becomes Somewhat More Extensive

If you operate your store in German, English, and French, for example, you must also consider the appropriate language versions for the warranty label. The GARAN label is not affected by this: It is deliberately designed to be language-neutral and looks the same throughout the EU; only the duration, brand, and model identifier are variable.

The EU provides the required language variants. You should therefore not translate the texts yourself or redesign the label.

In Shopify, the correct variant can be output depending on the active language of the store.

This is technically not rocket science.

You just have to set it up cleanly.

Do I Need a Shopify App for This?

No.

Of course, there are now apps that focus precisely on this new topic. The Shopify ecosystem would not be the Shopify ecosystem if someone did not turn it into a monthly subscription within a very short time.

However, this does not mean that you necessarily need an app for it.

We implement the adjustment directly in your Shopify theme.

This has several advantages:

  • no monthly app costs
  • no dependency on a third-party provider
  • no additional app in the Shopify backend
  • no unnecessary external scripts
  • integration tailored to your existing shop design
  • the implementation remains part of your store

Especially for a manageable mandatory function, we see little sense in permanently paying monthly fees for an app when the function can be cleanly implemented natively in the theme.

Keep it simple.

What Happens If You Do Nothing?

From September 27, 2026, the new information requirements apply.

Missing or incorrectly integrated mandatory information can become relevant under competition law and, in the worst case, lead to warnings.

Nevertheless, panic is not necessary.

But you should not ignore the topic either.

Our advice:

Check now whether your store is affected, clarify possible manufacturer guarantees, and plan the technical implementation in good time before September.

Then a new EU rule will not become a last-minute project.

The requirement is particularly relevant for retailers who sell physical goods to consumers. Pure B2B stores as well as pure services and digital content are generally not affected by this specific label requirement.

Is the GARAN Label the Same as the Warranty Label?

No. The harmonized warranty notice informs about legal consumer rights. The GARAN label, on the other hand, identifies a specific additional voluntary manufacturer durability guarantee.

When Do I Need the GARAN Label?

The GARAN label is relevant when a manufacturer offers a free durability guarantee for the entire product that runs for more than two years.

Must the GARAN Label Be Displayed on Every Product Page?

Only products for which a corresponding manufacturer guarantee exists require the product-specific GARAN labeling. The presentation must be clearly assigned to the respective product.

Can I Adapt the EU Labels to My Shop Design?

The official components and design specifications may not be arbitrarily changed. Product-specific information can only be added at the designated locations.

Do I Need a Shopify App for This?

No. The necessary elements can be implemented directly in a Shopify theme. This is precisely the approach we take in the implementation.
